Energy Literacy Advocates (ELA) is a non-partisan, non-profit, public education and advocacy group. Our mission is to improve the energy literacy of all sectors of our democracy in order to empower and sustain a responsible, comprehensive national energy policy.
By “responsible,” we mean a national energy policy that meets our country’s energy needs, and is conducive to a healthy economy, a foreign policy that does not undermine our national security, and a cleaner global environment.
By “comprehensive,” we mean a federal and state government-supported national energy policy that combines incentives and mandates for all the necessary elements of a secure and sustainable energy future. These include significantly higher levels of energy conservation and efficiency, as well as a mix of new energy research and development solutions. No one solution will lead to a secure energy future. But a secure energy future is within reach if we dedicate significant national will and resources within the window of opportunity we now have to act.
In a democracy, government and industry depend on informed citizens and consumers to drive truly responsible and significant solutions to national issues. As the chief architect of our democracy (Thomas Jefferson) said, “An informed democracy will act responsibly.” But on the issue of energy, our democracy is not yet informed enough to demand and support responsible action at the level and pace our current crisis requires. That’s why greater energy literacy is so critically needed.
